THE UNAUTHORISED — Taking a place no one granted you.
Jeanne d'Arc, Kingdom of France — 1412–1431. A peasant from Domrémy with neither rank nor military training, she secured an escort to meet Charles VII at Chinon in February 1429 and took part in lifting the siege of Orléans that May. Captured in 1430, she underwent more than seventy interrogations. A nullification trial overturned the sentence in 1456.
This is the situation carried by the Jeanne d'Arc capsule from the CULTURE OF WAR collection: not a tribute, but a mirror. The piece bears the inscription “JE N'AI PAS PEUR. JE SUIS NÉE POUR CELA”, the capsule's motto.
