ORIGIN

To drill comes from the Dutch drillen: ‘to bore by turning’. The drill bit and military practice share the same name for the same reason: you turn until you break through.

MEANING

Repetition creates finishers.

No one has ever won a fight with a movement discovered that same evening. Under pressure, only what has been repeated enough times to require no decision will come out. Drilling does not merely teach the movement; it removes it from conscious thought.

Bruce Lee said he did not fear the person who had practised ten thousand kicks once, but the person who had practised one kick ten thousand times. It is the most quoted line in combat gyms and one of the few that still holds up under scrutiny.

WHAT TYCE TAKES FROM IT

Drilling is boring, and that is precisely its value. Those who accept it eventually look fast; they have simply already moved while the other person is still thinking.
